NORTH PLATTE - Former U.S. senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole is helping with plans to build a veterans memorial in North Platte.

Dole has joined Senators Bob Kerrey and Chuck Hagel, both Vietnam veterans, and Representative Bill Barrett in endorsing the 20th Century Veterans' Memorial in North Platte.

Dole, who was seriously wounded in World War II, recently sent a letter of endorsement and a donation to the Mid-Nebraska Veterans' Memorial Association to help with the group's project.

"Projects that provide recognition for the contributions made by this nation's veterans deserve every citizen's full support," Dole said in his letter. "I would be pleased to provide my endorsement for your campaign and to have my name listed on the 'Walk of Honor,'" bricks listing donors.

Local organizers did not disclose how much money the former Kansas senator had donated.
