The first of the bronze statues is in place at the Memorial. It honors Major Hank Meisner of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a career military Army man. It will be joined this year by a statue of a Navy Flyer. The bronze plaques honoring all who gave their lives during the five major conflicts of the 20th Century are on the Kiosk in the Place of Meditation near the bas-relief mural. Check out the site when you are near North Platte. We are just off the intersection of Highway 83 and Interstate 80.

The Memorial is looking very good. The large three-person bronze, "Defenders of Liberty", is in place at the entryway to the Walk of Honor. There are about 2900 bricks installed along the Walk. The brick bas-relief mural at the south end of the Memorial high-lights the five major conflicts and is very detailed. For more information, call the office, 308-532-6579 or visit at the North Platte Pawnee Retirement Hotel, 221 East 5th, North Platte. The web site if www.20thcvetsmem.org. I'm from N.Platte, NE and am very proud of this project. My father Frank B. Lewis,Jr. and mother, Alyce still live there. Our dad served in WWII in the 8th Airforce, 3rd Air Div, 388th Bomber Group. He was the belly gunner on board the Jamica Ginger. He served from Jan 1944 to June 1946, during this time his bomber dropped 5 bombs and 2 chow hounds. He even stayed an extra 3 months after the war ended to drop food to those people starving in Germany. I'm a very proud American that has the honor of having 6 uncles that served in WWII, a father in WWII, a brother in Vietnam, a fiance in Vietnam that passed away in 1999 from complications from the war, a husband in the Airforce Reserves, 2 nephews in Desert Storm and several friends that have served and our serving now in the attack on Terrorism against the US. My heart goes out to all of those who have lost love ones in the defense of our great nation. My we all pray for those that are still fighting to make our country a safe and free place to live, for us and our children. My siblings and I are planning to buy a brick for our father. Thank you again for a wonderful place for us to honor him.

I ran across this on the net. It is too good not to share. WHAT IS A VET? Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC WHAT IS A VET? Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel. She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL. He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs. He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come. He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU". Remember November 11th is Veterans Day "It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag." Father Denis Edward O'Brien USMC

My father's family were all residents of North Platte. They lived there at least from the 1930's to 1967. My uncle David Kesler lost his life in the attack on Pearl Harbor. (He was one of two in No. Platte, the other was Holley) His brother, Gerald Kesler lost his life a year later. My grandmother Eva Kesler and her daughter Jane Jeffers volunteered at the Canteen. My father, Dale Kesler, was 13 at the time and delivered telegrams. He joined the Navy at the end of the war. I will buy a brick for my family. What a great thing to do.
